The Nirve portable mp3 speakers were “fairly inconspicuous, low cost and lightweight,” Mr. Dorn said. It “didn’t consume too much real estate on my handlebars, nor did it interfere with steering or bell ringing.” He said the sound quality was “surprisingly decent, and projected up at me rather than out at pedestrians or other cyclists.” His only complaint was that raising or lowering the volume required unzipping the case and adjusting the sound on his player. An external sound control would be helpful, he said. The speaker needs four AAA batteries (not included) and can be used with any MP3 player, the manufacturer says.
